Drafts, Comments & Motions

Drafts

Printed copies of the drafts to be considered at the Meeting will be mailed in advance of the Meeting to those members who request them via our draft-selection invitation, sent in early March 2015.

The electronic version of each draft will be posted on this website in PDF format for free access by members and project participants. Members for whom we have a working email address will be notified by email when each draft is posted. A limited number of printed drafts will be available at the Meeting.

Comments

Members who wish to make drafting suggestions to Reporters are not required to submit a formal motion to do so. In addition to comments and suggestions made on the floor of the Meeting, written comments on Annual Meeting Drafts are welcomed. They should be addressed to the Director, the Deputy Director, and the Reporters, whose contact information can be found on page iv of all ALI drafts. Unless expressed otherwise in the submission, by submitting written comments, the author authorizes the ALI to retain the submitted material in its files and archives, and to copy, distribute, publish, and otherwise make it available to others, with appropriate credit to the author.

Motions

Members must be present at the Meeting to make a motion. Because Discussion Drafts are not submitted for membership approval but for discussion only, motions on any portion of a Discussion Draft will not be entertained. Also, because Reporters’ Notes are considered the work of the Reporters and not of the Institute, they cannot be the subject of a motion. Presubmitted motions are ordinarily given priority at the Meeting over other motions. Members who plan to submit a motion on the floor of the Meeting are requested to submit it in advance in accord with the following procedure:

Email the text of the motion, together with a brief supporting statement in Word format, to publications@ali.org. Motions should be submitted in an easily readable font such as 12-point Times New Roman, and proposed changes, additions, or deletions to the draft’s text should be shown in redline format. Members without access to email should either mail or fax the material to Nancy Shearer, The American Law Institute, 4025 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3099, fax: 215-243-1636. Submissions will be acknowledged upon receipt.

Printed copies of submissions received via email by 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, May 8, will be made available at the Meeting. Members who submit a motion after May 8 are asked to hand-deliver at least 300 printed copies to the ALI Meeting registration desk, ATTN: Nancy Shearer, and also bring a USB drive containing the material in Word or PDF format for projection during the Meeting. Do not send those copies to ALI or to the Ritz-Carlton.

Submissions received by 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, May 14, will be posted on the ALI website. The Institute reserves the right to refuse to post materials it deems too lengthy or not appropriate for the purpose.

Members who intend to make a motion but are unable to submit it in advance are asked to bring a USB drive containing the material in Word or PDF format for projection during consideration of the motion. Motions may also be made from the floor without having advance written text.
