ALI Honors Robert H. Mundheim with its Distinguished Service Award

Lance Liebman, tadams-kristenhe ALI’s eminent former Director and current Council member, presented the Institute’s Distinguished Service Award to Robert H. Mundheim. Mr. Mundheim, who is Of Counsel with Shearman & Sterling, co-chaired the Fried, Frank firm,  represented the Department of the Treasury in the Iranian Hostage Crisis, was Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Salomon Smith Barney Holdings Inc., taught Civil Procedure to Felix Frankfurter, and served as Dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School for seven years.
Mr. Mundheim immigrated to the United States in 1939 from Hamburg, Germany and is now an emeritus member of the Institute’s Council, having served for 27 years.  Of Mr. Mundheim’s ALI service, Mr. Liebman stated, “I don’t believe anyone contributed more, or was more involved,” and thanked him for his availability and his steadfast wisdom.
In accepting the award, Mr. Mundheim described his ALI service as a source of intellectual sustenance and emphasized the Institute’s culture of mutual respect.   He reflected on the award’s prior recipients and shared his appreciation at being included among them.
